What a Turabian reference looks like

Turabian is Chicago style adapted for students and thesis writers, named after Kate L. Turabian, the University of Chicago's dissertation secretary. The notes–bibliography form cites sources in numbered footnotes with a full bibliography at the end — the format most history departments expect.

Reference list entry

Berg, Lena. "Climate Adaptation in Coastal Cities." Journal of Urban Studies 18, no. 2 (2023): 101–118.

In-text citation

superscript ¹ → footnote with the full reference

Key Turabian rules

  • Cite with a superscript number in the text; the full reference lives in the footnote.
  • The first footnote gives complete details; later ones shorten to surname, short title and page.
  • The bibliography inverts only the first author's name and is sorted alphabetically.
  • Journal articles include volume, "no.", issue, year in parentheses, then a colon and pages.
Used in: history, theology and student theses in the humanities Current edition: 9th edition (2018)
