Is CitApp free?
Yes, unlimited sources, all 150+ styles and the full reference list are free forever, with no ads. Saving via the browser extension or bookmarklet is free up to 10 times a week. The Google Docs add-on is free too: the free plan includes 30 citation insertions and 10 Academic Shield checks a week. PDF upload, importing from Zotero or Mendeley and every export are free too. Pro removes the weekly limits and adds Understand the source and the page archive.
How accurate are the citations?
Articles and books are looked up in authoritative databases (CrossRef, PubMed, arXiv, Google Books); a web page is read from the page itself. The result is formatted with the same CSL engine used by Zotero and Mendeley, except Turabian, Oxford and Bluebook, which have no CSL file and are formatted by AI. In a project you see every field and can edit it before you copy.
Which styles are supported?
17 built-in styles including APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago, IEEE, Vancouver, Oxford and OSCOLA, plus 130+ journal and university styles via CSL. You can also build your own.
Does CitApp work on a school Chromebook?
Yes. CitApp runs in the browser, so citing, saving sources to projects and building your reference list need nothing installed. If your school blocks browser extensions, the bookmarklet saves the page you are reading instead: it is a bookmark, not an extension. The Google Docs add-on comes from the Google Workspace Marketplace, which some school accounts only allow once an administrator has approved it.
Can I use it for a group project?
Yes. Open a project, press Share and send the invite link. Anyone with the link who signs in can view the project and add sources to it, so the whole group builds one reference list. Sharing is free.
Do I need to create an account?
No. On the citation generator you can cite a source, switch between APA, Harvard, MLA and the other common styles, build a whole reference list and download it for Word or as a .ris file, all without signing up. An account adds projects, syncing across your devices, the browser extension and the Google Docs add-on.
Will my sources still be there next term?
Yes, once they are in an account. Every source you save goes into your account, not your browser, so clearing your history or moving to a new laptop or phone loses nothing, and that is free. The list you build on the citation generator without an account is kept only in that browser. And every project exports to Word, BibTeX or RIS for free whenever you want your own copy.
